Braided vs PTFE vs Push-Lock Hose: Which Should You Use?
The Partsman
Three popular hose types, three different jobs. Pick the wrong one and you will get weeping, odour or a hose that won't take the pressure. Here is the rundown.
Rubber braided (100-series)
A nitrile inner with a stainless or nylon braid. Great value, flexible, and ideal for pump petrol, oil and coolant. The go-to all-rounder for most street builds.
PTFE / Teflon (200-series)
A PTFE inner liner that resists just about everything - perfect for E85, methanol, brake fluid and oil-vapour lines. It is the only choice for modern ethanol fuels because it won't let odour permeate. Needs PTFE-specific hose ends.
Push-lock (400-series)
A textile-reinforced hose that pushes onto barbed push-lock fittings - no clamps, no tools, very tidy. Best for low-pressure fuel, oil and breather lines. Quick and cost-effective.
Quick pick
- Pump petrol, oil, coolant: rubber braided or push-lock
- E85 / methanol / brake fluid: PTFE
- Tidy low-pressure runs on a budget: push-lock
