Silicone vs Rubber Hose: A Radiator and Intercooler Hose Guide

The Partsman

Tired, swollen coolant hoses are a roadside breakdown waiting to happen. Here is why many builders switch to silicone and how to pick the right pieces.

Silicone vs rubber

Silicone handles higher temperatures, resists perishing and holds its shape under boost far better than rubber. It also looks the part. The trade-offs are price - and that silicone is not suitable for oil or fuel.

Where silicone belongs

  • Radiator and coolant hoses
  • Intercooler and turbo plumbing (boost)
  • Heater and breather lines (coolant/air only)

Measuring up

Silicone hose is sized by internal bore (ID) - measure the OD of the pipe it slips over. For joins and bends, use the right elbow, reducer or hump hose rather than forcing a straight piece. Always finish with quality clamps.

Building intercooler piping?

Pair silicone joiners with alloy intercooler piping for a clean, boost-tight setup.
